WOODTURNING COURSES

We offer a range of courses tailored to suit individual or group requirements.  Courses for the beginner, courses for instructors and teachers, courses for professionals, all in our well equipped workshop.  With the latest Vicmarc electronic variable speed lathe, as well as the indestructable Harrison Graduate lathes, students  experience woodturning in a professional workshop.

Exploration into Woodturning
An opportunity to explore many aspects of woodturning from spinning tops to table legs in dry or Green wood.  Cross-grain and end-grain turning, long hole boring, decorating techniques, all using a complete range of tool, equipment and chucking systems.  Or select a particular direction to develop special skills and ideas.

Turning Green Wood
This is turning in both senses of the term ‘green’ as a conservationist and working with fresh wood. Starting with fresh logs, a chain saw and an understanding of the tree, we will cover, cross-grain and end-grain work, translucent turning, natural edged bowls and the use of crotch wood. Looking into the log for that special figuring. Covering the complete process from log to finished product, using the best of tools equipment and chucking systems

Instructor Training
A group of courses, usually lasting 7 days Sunday to Saturday, to meet the needs of anyone involved in woodturning training. From the professional woodturner running courses in his workshop to the college lecturer running courses for National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ).  We have a package designed specially for the needs of the secondary school. Courses can be arranged to meet the particular needs of educational establishments either in my workshop or on site when 2 or more students enrol.

THE WOODTURNING BUSINESS
A 4-week woodturning course for people who are already, or are planning to become, self-employed woodturners. The courses are tailored around individual requirements in order to prepare them for the setting up and running of a successful woodturning business.  These courses are usually done on an individual basis. The first part of the course will take the form of an assessment of the individual’s skills, financial situation, geographical location and personal ambition. The results of this assessment will be used to plan the remainder of the training programme, which will cover the following topics: Product selection. Market research. Production methods. Corporate Image. Marketing and Packaging. Making a business plan, including financial and production planning. Further topics are added to suit individual requirements.
