Most of the houses in the village were modernised in 1931 when the porch was added.  The thatch roof of the byre (the lower roof section) was replaced with Caithness slate.
For my first 5 years as a woodturner, I shared the byre with our milk cow.  The cow was then moved to another building and I expanded my workshop.

The village of Brough was created during the Highland clearances when the people were moved from the hill areas of the Highlands.  They were settled on small areas of ground which were not large enough to support a family, so that they were obliged to work for the landlord at the seaweed and fishing.  These areas of ground were called ‘Crofts’ and were generally around 3 acres.
Our house is one of those crofts and became known as ‘The Croft’ .
